This is a story that begins on the morning of the 22nd of January 1879 when a force of over 20 000 Zulus attacked a portion of the main British invasion force in Isandlwana. Armed predominantly with assegais and cow hide shields against an army equipped with modern rifles, the Zulus courage, discipline and endurance lead to their victory. Later that day, in a battle that lasted nearly 12 hours the British Army conquered the Zulu force at Rorkes Drift. As we stand on these sites we are transported back in time to the series of bloody battles that resulted in the crushing of the proud Zulu Nation – thus ending a period of regional military might spanning sixty years.
